Occupations in the motive power sector are in extreme demand, with many available workplace opportunities and apprenticeships. York River Public School has made motive power careers a priority during the 2022-2023 school year using funding from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).

All students have built electric cars (Junior students), and push/pull vehicles, using Lego kits (Kindergarten), wood kits (Primary students) and the school’s woodshop. Junior students operated skill saws, drill presses, soldered; created chemical and physical bonds; propulsion and gear ratios; and they designed and used rotational gears and machines during their learning. According to the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association of Ontario, there will be around 15,000 openings in the motive power sector over the next five years.

If you have a vintage, or modern vehicle in your garage that you would like to show off, this is your chance! If you are connected to a touring group, tell your friends.

There is still time to join the show. Get in touch with the York River Public School main office at 613-332-1833.
