Invitation to Join the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)

September 26, 2022 - Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) is seeking nominations for the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for the 2022-2026 term.  Under the “Education Act,” every exceptional pupil is entitled to Special Education programs and services which meet their needs. At HPEDSB, SEAC plays a vital role in ensuring that exceptional pupils receive appropriate educational services.

SEAC advises, advocates and supports processes that meet the educational needs of children with special needs in the community. SEAC also works collaboratively with other SEACs to advocate for effective policies, practices and procedures across Ontario.

- Report and make recommendations to the school board on matters regarding Special Education programs and services for exceptional students
- Participate in the school board’s annual review of the Special Education Plan
- Participate in the school board’s annual budget process, as it relates to Special Education
- Advocacy

SEAC membership consists of up to 12 association/organization members and two members-at-large. The committee meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 4:00 PM. Local associations or organizations are invited to submit a letter of application for a representative on the SEAC. Applications for membership-at-large are also welcome.

An association is defined as “an association or organization of parents/guardians that operates locally within the area of jurisdiction of a school board and that is affiliated with an association or organization that is not an association or organization of professional educators, but that is incorporated and operates throughout Ontario to further the interests and well-being of one or more groups of exceptional children or adults.”

To qualify as a representative, a person must be: a Canadian citizen; over age 18; a resident within the jurisdiction of HPEDSB; a public school elector; and not employed by HPEDSB in any capacity. The term of office aligns with the 4-term of office for school board trustees.

Letters of application may be sent to Ken Dostaler, Superintendent of Education, 156 Ann Street, Belleville, ON K8N 3L3, or [email protected], by Friday, October 28, 2022 at 4:00 PM. Please indicate on your letter of application whether you would represent a local association, or are interested in being appointed as a member-at-large.
