Presentation

Early Reading Intervention at York River Public School
Principal Marion Wilson, Vice-principal Mike Love and Teacher Tim Wagland spoke about the Levelled Literacy Intervention (LLI) Program being used at York River Public School. LLI is being used with nine Primary students who were struggling in reading. It involves using engaging strategies to get and keep students interested in reading, using a team approach among teachers and includes an at-home reading component. The presenters showed a video in which students talked about being non-readers a few months ago and their journey to becoming readers now. Some of the strategies the students shared were: using sight words, re-reading, checking for the story to make sense, asking questions about the story and asking the teacher for help. The presenters stated that students are more engaged in learning and are showing success. Each student is well on the way to becoming a fluent reader at grade-level.

Report from Committee of the Whole
Highlights from this report included the following:

  • disposal of surplus property; and
  • Bayside sewage treatment facility.

    the central value of culture, language and knowledge of history in contributing to the well-being of
  • First Nation, Métis and Inuit students, families and communities;
