Build a brain, cooking and more at StEP UP enrichment event for Grade 7 and 8 students
May 1, 2019-Student-Empowered Pathways . . . Unlimited Possibilities, that's the focus of a one-day enrichment event for students in Grades 7 and 8.

StEP UP is an enrichment event for students who have confidence learning in different environments, with new and unknown peers, and who have expressed an interest learning more about in post-secondary opportunities.

9:15 - 9:30 a.m.: Welcome and opening remarks in the Cafeteria
9:40 - 11:55 a.m. Session 1
12:00 - 12:35 p.m. Lunch (pizza provided by Loyalist College)
12:45 - 3:00 p.m. Session 2
3:00 - 3:15 p.m. Sharing reflections on the day
3:15 p.m. Dismissal to buses
175 students are registered. They will participate in two workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, taught by Loyalist College instructors, as well as full-group sessions at the beginning and end of the day.

Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship |
In this session, students will build a figure from copper and practise soldering the pieces together. They will also have the opportunity to disassemble an engine and deploy a vehicle airbag. |
Biosciences |
Students will have the opportunity to perform a gel electrophoresis, which is a very useful technique in DNA analysis. Students will also complete a thin-layer chromatography analysis with Skittles. Session requirements: Students are asked to remove jewelry, bring a long sleeve shirt, wear closed-toe shoes and tie back long hair. |
Child & Youth Care |
Build-A-Brain Workshop This tabletop game, developed at Harvard University,helps build understanding of the powerful role of experiences on early brain development-what promotes early brain development, what derails it, and what are the consequences for society? Come join us to build a brain! |
Culinary Management |
Do you have a passion for cooking, baking and creating? Get ready to excite your taste buds as you work to perfect two cookie recipes-classic chocolate chip cookies and delicious jam jams. Session requirements: Students are asked to remove jewelry, bring a long-sleeved shirt, wear closed-toe shoes and tie back long hair. |
Esthetics & Spa Management |
Come and experience all that the esthetics industry has to offer. Get an in-depth look into the Loyalist College Esthetics & Spa Management program and the amazing careers that await post-graduation. Watch an interactive facial demo, then learn how to perform a hand and nail treatment, and make your own scrub. |
Interactive Media Development: Animation & Game Development |
Using Unreal 4, students will create a game level which they can play. This is an introduction to game design and game content creation. This session will include making materials, environments and other in-game features. |
Justice Studies |
This session will involve a forensic search of a motor vehicle in the Automotive Lab. Students will also participate in a restraint training exercise (applying handcuffs). The session will conclude with a brief presentation about the Loyalist College Justice Studies programs. |
Photojournalism |
Students will be provided with a camera and tasked with one of two assignments to be shot on campus: 1) people of Loyalist College; and 2) architecture of Loyalist College.
Participants will be given time to photograph. After students return to the lab, we will look at their photos and create a slideshow of their best work.

Public Relations: Event Management |
Students will work together in small teams to create an innovative concert promotion plan. Using a variety of public relations, advertising, graphic design and social media techniques, teams will compete to create the best promotional plan and experience the thrill of bringing music to the masses! |
Social Service Worker |
The Social Service Worker program will provide an overview of what a social service worker is qualified to do in our community. We will be offering a fun and interactive session that will introduce students to foundational interviewing and counselling skills through several interactive activities. We will also be completing a cultural diversity activity that will allow students to gain knowledge of the importance of cultural awareness in the social service worker field. |
