The week of May 7 - 11, 2018 is a time to recognize three important events related to achieving excellence and equity and well-being, learning & leadership and public confidence in public education.

The vision in the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan: is All students prepared and empowered for the possibilities of today and tomorrow. Through this vision, employees model the eight Growing with Character attributes, which are: caring, cooperation, honesty, humour, integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness.

EDUCATION WEEK

Education Week is celebrated annually during the first full week of May by school boards and school communities throughout Ontario. It is a time for students, employees, families and school communities to celebrate student achievement and well-being. The provincial this year is<Equity in Action

  • On Wednesday, May 2, the 28 Celebration of Dance will be held at Zwicks Island. Thousands of students will sing and dance in unison to 12 songs, including four new ones added this year. This event is a celebration of well-being, physical literacy and character, and features fun inclusive activity.

CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

The first full week of May is recognized as Children's Mental Health Week. It is a time to increase awareness of the signs of child and youth mental health problems, decrease the stigma, and understand that help is available_and it works.

  • Well-Being is one of our priorities in the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan, with a goal being to develop the elements of well-being for students and employees collaboratively. We know that providing safe, welcoming, caring and inclusive learning environments supports student achievement and well-being. Some of our actions in these areas have been to provide professional learning to employees, to develop pathways to care for students requiring higher levels of support, and to weave mental health wellness and well-being into our everyday work. We continue to support the development of positive mental health and value the important partnerships we have with community experts in well-being.

CHILD AND YOUTH WORKER APPRECIATION WEEK

Child and Youth Worker Appreciation Week is also recognized during the first full week of May. It is a time to recognize employees who provide therapeutic interventions for students to promote self-esteem, opportunities to heal and experience positive relationships.

  • In Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, child and youth workers engage with students each day and their efforts connect directly to our strategic plan priorities of Achieving Excellence & Equity and Well-Being. They provide individual student support, run group and classroom programs, and support district-wide initiatives, such as restorative practices and bullying prevention programs.
