January 30, 2018—It’s been an exciting learning experience for students from three HPEDSB elementary schools. They’ve been researching, building and testing floating structures leading up to the Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Races.
During the competition tomorrow, January 31, 2018, these Grade 7 and 8 students will test their ability to build a floating structure that will outperform others in speed and weight challenges.
Teams of four are provided all the necessary materials to build a boat in just two hours. Students must use their problem-solving, teamwork and design skills as they create a seaworthy structure out of two sheets of 4′ by 8′ corrugated cardboard and some duct tape.
Students will be judged on quality of construction, planning and design, safety and cleanliness, teamwork and team spirit, visual appeal, and essential skills knowledge. There will also be a speed and a weight challenge.
This competition involves students from four area school boards. HPEDSB schools involved include the following:
- two teams from Harry J. Clarke Public School
- two teams from Prince Charles Public School (Trenton)
- there is one team from Susanna Moodie Elementary School
The competition takes place at the Quinte Sports & Wellness Centre from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2018.
