Two public schools slated for closure
Two public schools are slated to close, as approved by trustees at a public Board meeting on May 25, 2009.
Bancroft Public School and Sir Mackenzie Bowell Public School in Belleville will close in June 2011. Until that time, both will remain open and will continue to provide the same quality of programming and educational opportunities for students as they do today.
“This is an exciting time to renew facilities and build our future. These decisions have been a long time coming and they were not easy to make. This is the first time the Board followed a new process under the Student Enrolment/School Capacity policy. We believe we did a thorough and effective consultation with school and community members,” remarks Carl Pitman, Chair of the Board. “We know that adjustments are needed to make the process better in the future. But even so, our decisions reflect the unique cultures of each school community. Most importantly, the decision to close the two schools represents the Board’s commitment to provide safe, effective and respectful learning environments for all students and staff while maintaining facilities that will continue to be available for community use,” he adds.
Bancroft Public School
Beginning in September 2011, students from Bancroft Public School will be relocated to the existing North Hastings Senior Elementary site. The current site serves Grade 7 and 8 students. It will become a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 facility with programs to serve the student population. Renewal and renovations will be required.
Sir Mackenzie Bowell Public School
Beginning in September 2011, students from Sir Mackenzie Bowell Public School will be relocated to Prince Charles School and Sir John A. Macdonald School. Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 programs will be consolidated into both to serve the student populations. Renewal, renovations and additions will be required at each site, as well.
Integration and transition processes will begin in these school communities in September 2009. A first step will be to create an integration committee with representation from staff, students and community members. The committee will guide the process during the transition period. Steps along the way will include architect selection, floor plan development, tender processes, and the construction phase.
According to the Board’s Student Enrolment/School Capacity policy, the Board cannot recommend the formation of another Accommodation Review Committee for either the three West Belleville schools or the North Hastings school group for five years, except where extenuating circumstances warrant, such as an unexpected economic or demographic shift, or a change in the school’s physical condition.
