Garden is a math and business teacher, and former PECI student. He has been teaching for six years and has been at PECI the whole time. His passion for PECI and Prince Edward County run deep.
He attended PECI as a student from 1995 to 2000 (Grade 9 – 13) and has lived in Prince Edward County his entire life. He is involved in all aspects of school life: from organizing international trips and promoting PECI in the local media to fundraising, clubs, student council and coaching.
Grade 12 student, Cassidy Allison, was thrilled to hear that Garden had been selected as this year’s Educator of the Year as it was her idea to nominate him. Cassidy organized letters of support from teachers, parents and students and submitted them to the Educator of the Year Committee.
In her own letter of support, Allison said, “Mr. Garden has been a major mentor for me throughout my high school career and has made significant contributions to the school and local community.”
An avid athlete and sports enthusiast, Garden coaches the PECI basketball team and has been instrumental in its development and success. In the community, he started an after school basketball league called County Clippers for elementary school students.
“He recognized a need for organized athletics after school and has worked extremely hard to give elementary school students a great opportunity to develop important skills on and off the court,” said a local elementary school teacher in his letter of support.
In the off season, Garden can be found on the baseball pitch coaching both the PECI team, as well as some Prince Edward County teams. He also referees hockey for both the Prince Edward County Minor Hockey Association and the Wellington Dukes.
“Rob is a shining example of what a high school educator should be,” said a PECI parent in her letter of support. “Not only does Rob excel at teaching in a way that makes his students want to learn, he is an outstanding role-model for our students both at school and in the community.”
Garden will be presented the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award for Educator of the Year on May 10th at the Bay of Quinte Country Club at a reception beginning at 4 p.m. The Educator of the Year Committee has been celebrating outstanding educators in Hastings and Prince Edward County since 1967 and is pleased to add Rob’s name to the list of outstanding educators in Hastings and Prince Edward.
