Remembrance Day message from Rob McGall, Director of Education, Friday, November 9, 2012

Today I want to take a moment to remind you of Remembrance Day coming this Sunday, and to make a few comments about our students’ involvement in this important day.

On November 11 each year at public gatherings around the country, Canadians pay tribute with a moment of silence to the country’s fallen soldiers from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Afghanistan conflict and peace-keeping missions.

As Director of Education, I’m proud of the many events that are occurring in our schools today as our staff and students mark Remembrance Day.

This morning I had the privilege of being at Bayside Secondary School for the Remembrance Day assembly. There was a large turnout of Legion members and close to 100 students involved as presenters, vocal and drama performers, band members, videographers and crew. The guest speaker was Major James Pierotti, with the 424 Squadron, Search and Rescue, who transferred to CFB Trenton this past summer. He grew up in Stirling and made a personal connection to the hundreds of students in the room. And, in fact, he left immediately after his presentation to head back to the base to board a C-130 Hercules airplane heading for the north on search and rescue training.

This Sunday, November 11, 2012, students from several Hastings and Prince Edwards schools will participate in ceremonies, representing their school and the Board.

I appreciate the efforts of all employees to support our students and make connections to the communities we serve.
