School board ratifies agreement for secondary school teachers

27 January 2009, Belleville, ON—School board trustees have ratified a four-year collective agreement for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) – District 29.

The collective agreement is for the period September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2012 and affects 500 contract and occasional secondary school teachers. A first step in the negotiation process was for the provincial OSSTF organization to sign a provincial framework agreement, commonly referred to as a Provincial Discussion Table (PDT) Framework Agreement. That PDT agreement was signed November 27, 2008. Following a series of local negotiation sessions a tentative agreement was reached on January 14, 2009.

“We are very pleased with this mutually-agreeable settlement. We are fortunate to have a negotiating team that was focused on student success and valuing employees,” remarks Carl Pitman, Chair of the Board.”

Highlights of the agreement include these features of the PDT framework agreement:

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves more than 16,700 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of close to 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, provide the best opportunity for students to learn. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
