|Once again, first semester for a group of Quinte Secondary School students is guaranteed to be hard work—because they will be building a house.
Media representatives are invited to attend a ground-breaking ceremony
Students will work alongside skilled tradespeople and sub-contractors of Geertsma Homes Ltd. through the Quinte Student Structures Home Building Program. The program provides school-to-work opportunities for senior technology students who enter the four-credit Student Home Building Program. While in the program, students will construct a family home from start to finish. They will have experiences in a variety of skilled trades such as carpentry, roofing, electrical wiring, plumbing, bricklaying, insulating, drywall, heating and air conditioning, interior trim carpentry. Students will also learn teamwork, problem-solving, safe work practices and how to work effectively with other tradespeople.
This one-semester program offers students opportunities to earn four credits. They will work four days a week on-site with their teacher supervising and with sub-contractors at lot Geertsma’s Deerfield Park subdivision. Students will be at the work site from Monday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and attend classes on Fridays for in-school assignments related to the project.
