Prince Edward County was chosen by the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Committee to host a community celebration as part of the Olympic Torch Relay across Canada. The celebration will be held in mid-December and will involve district students and school communities.
Date: Tuesday, December 15, 2009
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Location: Prince Edward County Fairgrounds, Picton.
A community celebration will take place prior to the torch arrival, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The one hour presentation will focus on Prince Edward County culture and heritage with flag bearers, music, dancers and video montages showcasing local talent. The Olympic organization committee will host the formal ceremonies beginning at approximately 11:00 a.m. with the arrival of the torch bearer.
All schools in Prince Edward County will participate in the event, with over 2,000 students, teachers and volunteers attending. Designated areas will be allotted for each school, with volunteers assigned to direct student traffic and ensure student safety.
A skills completion will be held at the Picton arena beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Prince Edward Collegiate Institute entrepreneur class, led by teacher Rob Garden, will host that event. Ten students from Grades 6-8 have been selected from each school to participate.
Olympic theme activities are taking place at schools, as well. Classes are working on school banners and student artwork to showcase at the celebration and a food drive initiative to support the local food banks is underway.
