New venue and sponsor for regional science fair
Organizers of the Quinte Regional Science & Technology Fair are pleased to announce two major new partners for the 2010 event: Loyalist College and Belleville Kiwanis Club. Loyalist College will host the QRSTF in March 2010.
Loyalist College provides a venue that has outstanding facilities, allowing students to showcase their efforts in a most appropriate fashion. Students will be provided with tables and chairs, with the awards ceremony to be hosted in Alumni Hall. The organizing committee is enthused about the opportunities provided by the new location.
Over time the QRSTF has been hosted in various venues. When it started 50 years ago it was held in the Armories at the corner of Station and Pinnacle streets in Belleville. In recent years, the fair has been hosted at the Quinte Mall in Belleville. The mall personnel and businesses were gracious hosts and for over 35 years, providing free floor space and judges’ headquarters.Their support has been greatly appreciated.
Funding the event includes sending the winning team to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors the organizers have been able to send a full complement of five students, as well as two chaperone/delegates each year. Maintaining this level of funding has been a challenge especially with the economic downturn. The Belleville Kiwanis Club has provided $5,000 to the QRSTF, a welcome donation after the loss of two major sponsors. The funds will be targeted to sending a student to the Canada Wide Science Fair and to supporting a science promoter/entertainer Alan Nursall, former director of Science North, the Science Centre in Sudbury Ontario. In addition, discussions are already underway on how Kiwanis members can further promote project-based science in schools.
Solving such problems as global warming, defeating cancer and predicting earthquakes are only a few areas where advances are necessary if humans are to continue to prosper. And it all starts with curious minds being given the opportunities to explore their world. The Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair is truly grateful for the funding it has received that permits us to continue to support our youth’s scientific and technological development.
