Moira SS and Quinte SS students achieved success through creative artwork

Congratulations to two students who were recognized at an awards ceremony and received monetary awards for their artistic creations. Moira Secondary School graduate Jenny Chen won a $500 prize and Quinte Secondary School student Brittany Gibson won a $300 People’s Choice Award.

Secondary student artwork was celebrated at an awards ceremony for UpstARTS at the Empire Theatre in Belleville, on Thursday, February 24, 2011.

UpstARTS is a new initiative which encourages local high school art students to develop their creativity, and rewards talent in the visual arts. UpstARTS is financially supported by the Jack Parrott Foundation and is mutually sponsored by the Belleville Art Association and Gallery 121.

Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky addressed the students about the importance of sharing their art with the community and congratulated the Belleville Art Association and Gallery 121 on their initiative to encourage student artists.

All area high schools were invited to participate in an art competition. Winning students have had their art displayed at Gallery 121 and the Belleville Art Association in downtown Belleville over the past year.

A total of $2,500 in prize money was presented to deserving students.
