Congratulations to Tinneke Wilson, recipient of the Kids Fit Mentor of the Year award
Tinneke Wilson is the 2010 winner of the Kids Kit Mentor of the Year award. She is a teacher and coach at Park Dale School.
“As a teacher and coach, I realized I had the opportunity to really influence students and have been working for that goal ever since,” remarked Tinneke.
Tinneke is involved in many health and fitness programs and activities. She has been involved with the Healthy Active Schools Executive Committee for the past eight years, supporting schools as they develop a comprehensive approach to school health. She has taken on a leadership role at Park Dale School to lead their Healthy Active Schools Committee.
Tinneke has partnered with the community in various ways. She worked with Parks and Recreation to develop an after school activity program and the Go Girls program to build activity and healthy decision making in girls. With the Health Unit, she worked with the school team and the dietitian to improve the quality of school lunch options and increase the number of students actively walking to school in the Walk to School program.
She developed and implemented a school wide Run Across Canada program to promote and motivate students to accumulate school wide and personal kilometres to run across the country. She has coached for the Belleville Youth Soccer Club in both house league and rep divisions. Personally, she tries to stay very active with a variety of activities such as jogging, bike riding, kayaking, strength training, and she recently learned to play hockey.
“I like to be an example to others around me so that when I say something to encourage someone else to get active, it carries some weight,” said Tinneke.
Tinneke does not accomplish these activities alone, she has a team of strong leadership students who help her called the Fitness Fanatics who run many events such as the Winter Fashion Shows to promote dressing warm to walk to school, intramural activities, skipping clubs and many other activities.
Tinneke received the award at the Health and Fitness Expo in May at The Tenth Ox in downtown Belleville. The Kids Fit Mentor of the Year award comes with a $500 prize that can be used to purchase equipment for Park Dale School. Tinneke and the Fitness Fanatics have decided on either an outdoor volleyball system or an Omniken Ball kit to promote intramural events and alternative games at the school.
Heather Rutherford, the principal at Park Dale School nominated Tinneke for this award. Tinneke is passionate about teaching students’ health and fitness and she was thrilled to receive the award.
