Bayside Grade 10 Civics students define philanthropy, win $5,000 for Gleaners Food Bank

Students at Bayside Secondary School care about their community and recently showed how much by securing a $5,000 donation for The Gleaners Food Bank.

Students in Grade 10 Canadian Civics classes were actively engaged in investigating social issues, reflecting on community values and visiting community volunteers at work. This in-class learning and hands-on experience were the result of participating in the innovative Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI).

Six Bayside SS Grade 10 Civics classes participated in YPI. Each class voted on a final team and each of the six class teams competed at the school level. YPI gives $5,000 to each participating school. The Gleaner’s team won at school level.

As a result of winning at BSS, The Gleaner’s team was invited to a YPI celebration in Toronto on Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Congratulations to Bayside SS students Laurie Wood, Iain Hutchison and Emily Kingdon who won the judges’ favour, with their heartfelt and detailed presentation about the programs run by The Gleaners Food Bank. As a result of their visit to The Gleaners and their success in telling the story of a local charity, Laurie, Iain, and Emily earned a $5,000 donation for the food bank.
