2010 Voices from the Forest event

The event "Voices from the Forest" was created to encourage, support and celebrate student readers in Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) secondary schools.

In 2009, HPEDSB held a local event at the Education Centre. At the event authors conducted readings and spoke with approximately 55 students from six HPEDSB secondary schools.

This year, Bayside Secondary School student, Kathleen Butler, created a title for the day, "Voices from the Forest." Almost 70 students from seven secondary schools spent Tuesday, May 13 at the Education Centre with four 2010 White Pine Authors.

Students who were interested in writing spent two hours in a workshop with Pam Bustin, playwright, and author. The other students attended readings and discussions with Lesley Livingston, Toronto actress and writer; Courtney Summers, author; and Susan Juby, author and television series creator. Each of the writers that presented at this year’s Voices from the Forst event had different reasons for writing, but all shared their passion for writing.

Voices from the Forest provided an opportunity for passionate readers in each HPEDSB secondary schools to meet each other, share ideas, learn about writing, and meet published authors who did their best to show students that writing is an achievable and exciting possible career for those willing to take the risk.
