I G.E.T. IT—Girls Exploring Trades

April 11, 2017—On April 12, 150 high school girls will participate in an event to explore non-traditional trades for women. Girls often do not connect with career opportunities that exist in the trades for them.

The trades are not “a man’s world”. Women perform just as well as men in the trades. Women also bring many additional skills and perspectives, such as collaborative communication styles, great attention to detail and empathy, which are recognized by many employers in the trades as important and valuable. (Ontario College of Trades)

8 Wing/Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton has partnered with the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, East Central Ontario Training Board and The W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowship at Loyalist College to host this event.

The day will begin at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Trenton at 9:30 a.m. Keynote speaker Jamie McMillan, an ironworker, will talk about her experiences in the trades and what led her to the career. McMillan has provided provided inspiration and mentorship to hundreds of young women.

Following McMillan’s talk, she will then be joined by Lieutenant Colonel Cathy Blue, Wing Logistics and Engineering Officer of 8 Wing/CFB Trenton; Pauline Carkner, High Voltage Electrician; Kasey Waterman , Auto Service Tech; and Rebecca Chokly, Millwright. The women will share their experiences about the trade they chose to work in.

Following the panel, the high school girls will spend time at various areas throughout 8 Wing/CFB Trenton where volunteers will teach them about the different trades that they could go into. The students will get first-hand experience in these trades and will be well-informed on the opportunities available to them.

This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
