Accelerated Program Information

What accelerated programs are offered?

In addition to the OYAP programs offered in Grades 11 and 12, accelerated programs are offered to students in their graduating year in the following areas:

  • Automotive Service Technician
  • Brick & Stone Mason
  • Cook/Chef
  • Carpenter
  • Early Childhood Educator
  • Hairstylist

Why are they accelerated?

These programs will allow secondary school students to complete the first session of the "in-school” sessions required for the specific apprenticeship training, while still in high school.   Students spend a portion of their semester at a community college or training facility and a portion of their semester in a cooperative education placement.  Please refer to individual programs offered.

What are the advantages of participating in these accelerated programs?

  1. The student has a "jump start" on the time required to complete an apprenticeship.
  2. Students will be formally registered with an employer under an apprenticeship contract.
  3. Program fees are covered by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
  4. Some of the accelerated programs offer advanced standing at the college level if the student decides to enter a college program.

Requirements to participate in the accelerated programs.

Students must:

  • be in their graduating year
  • obtain recommendations from either the principal or vice principal of the student’s school, and two of the following: the student’s guidance counsellor, technology teacher or co-op teacher. E-mail addresses are also requested.
  • demonstrate competencies in math, science, communications and technology
  • have taken the related in school technology courses eg. Grade 11/12 Transportation Technology for Automotive, Grade 11/12 Foods, Hospitality for Cook/Chef program etc.
  • have completed a cooperative education placement in a related trade
  • agree to program expectations in high school and college programs. Eg. Requirement to purchase tools and equipment
  • maintain passing grades of 60% or better in high school co-op and college programs
  • complete an OYAP application form which contains references and school related information
  • work with the cooperative education coordinator to contact an employer who is willing to sign the student to an apprenticeship contract
  • arrange for transportation to the worksite and to the college delivering the Level 1 apprenticeship program
How is the Student Insured?
The Ministry of Education is responsible for the Worker’s Compensation insurance during the cooperative education placement. While taking the phase one in-school Apprenticeship Curriculum, at the college, students will be covered by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Students on the payroll of a training organization are covered by the company. If paid by the employer for overtime (after cooperative education hours) students must be covered by the company for those overtime hours.

Costs
There may be some costs the student will be expected to cover while participating in the accelerated programs. These include:
• transportation to and from the college (financial help may be available for long distance commuting);
• transportation to and from the student’s cooperative education work placement;
• safety equipment needed at the work station and at the college;
• certain tools which the student may require to own in order to perform his/her job or may require for the first in-school session at the College;

• parking at the College.

How is Training Monitored?
During the cooperative education placement, the teacher will visit the placement at regular intervals. The teacher and the employer will monitor and evaluate the student. While the student is attending the program at the college the student will be monitored and evaluated by the course instructor assigned by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities. The hours a student spends on the job as a registered apprentice will be logged towards the student's apprenticeship hours.
