Everyone gains when schools promote health!
Steps to a Healthier School include:
STEP 1 - Form your school action team
STEP 2 - Identifying your strengths
STEP 3 - Determine your focus area
STEP 4 - Develop your action plan
STEP 5 - Implement your action plan
STEP 6 - Review and next steps
STEP 7 - Celebrate your achievements
STEP 1 - Form your school action team
Creating a Healthy Active School Community requires broad support. As a principal, staff member or school council representative, you and your colleagues may take the lead but don't go it alone. To be successful, you need a much larger group of supporters from the community.

STEP 2 - Identifying your strengths
Once your Healthy Active School Community Team has been created, it is important to get as accurate a reflection as possible of the current activities going on in your school community at this point in time. This will help you see the "big picture" and identify any gaps or priority areas.

STEP 3 - Determine your focus area
Your school is a very busy place and your HASC team has limited resources so it is important to review your current activities and decide where to focus your energy. Reflecting on the information you have gathered in STEP 2 should help you visualize your school's assets so that you can build on your strengths.

STEP 4 - Develop your action plan
Once you have chosen your focus area, it is important to decide on one or more objectives. These are the things you want to accomplish over the next 1-3 years to improve your school community's health.
Make sure the objectives are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely).
The HASC action template will help you develop a realistic action plan to meet your objectives. Use the plan to build awareness, keep on track and help measure your success.

STEP 6 - Review and next steps
It is important to keep your action plan alive. In order to ensure that your school community is still on track it is important to reflect on your progress at regular intervals. What activities have you done to work towards your objectives? What obstacles have you encountered? What supports are needed to keep your plan on track?

STEP 7 - Celebrate your achievements
It is important to celebrate your achievements along the way. Acknowledging your progress will help keep everyone focused and motivated. Celebrating can help energize your school community and encourage others to get involved.
Communicate what you have achieved through PA announcements, school newsletters, monthly assemblies and updates at staff and school council meetings.
Make sure you apply for recognition from the Ministry of Education too!
