General
Health Canada- Healthy Living Healthy Schools page-This webpage features reports on child and school health, and tools to promote both.  

Health Unit website- The Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention ›School Support section, describes how the Health Unit works with schools.  It also has information on a number of health topics.  In the Resources section, there is a School Resource catalogue.  

Joint Consortium for School Health- Is a partnership of federal, provincial, and territorial governments from across Canada, working together to promote the health of children and youth in the school setting.

Ophea- This organization’s high quality programs and services can help your school community address a variety of health related topics and all of the components of a Healthy School identified in the Government of Ontario's Foundations for a Healthy School framework. They have many curriculum-based teaching resources.

Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition-An Ontario-wide, broad-based coalition dedicated to promoting the full implementation of the internationally and nationally supported ‘healthy schools’ concept across Ontario, through awareness-raising, capacity-building, knowledge-exchange of successes and best practices, and influencing policy development and funding.

Ontario Ministry of Education- Healthy Schools- This webpage features information and resources for students, parents, teachers and principals.  It includes information and links to the Ontario Health Schools Recognition Program.

Physical Activity

Active and Safe Routes to School- A comprehensive community-based initiative that promotes the use of active and efficient transportation for the daily trip to school, addressing health and traffic safety issues.

Active Healthy Kids Canada - This website offers the latest research around physical activity and children. You can download the annual Active Healthy Kids Report Card for Physical Activity. This report highlights various areas that impact physical activity levels and offers strategies for change. 

Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity-This non-profit organization encourages girls and women to become active in sport and physical activity, as participants and leaders. 

Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines - The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) issued new guidelines in 2011, including Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour guidelines.  You can download copies of these documents. Support documents are coming soon.

CIRA Ontario -A non-profit organization promoting fun, active participation for all through intramural and recreational programs in the education and recreation communities. They also offer an online store. 

Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada- This website offers some great resources including Jumping into the Curriculum, Powerskills and Playskills. Click on the Healthy Kids Menu for resources. 

Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care - This Ontario government webpage has many resources for promoting physical activity

Pause to Play-This website is designed for kids.  It includes information on a number of sports such as lacrosse and volleyball.  It also offers great information on the F.I.T.T. principles.  A chat room is available for students to discuss sports and physical activity with other kids their own age.

Physical and Health Education Canada (formerly Cahperd) – A national, charitable, voluntary-sector organization seeking to influence the healthy development of children and youth by advocating for quality, school-based physical and health education. 

Raise the Bar Intramurals- A program designed to improve the quality of intramural/house league programs in elementary and secondary schools across Ontario. Raise the Bar provides schools with resources and assistance in the development of these programs.

Healthy Eating

Nutrition Information

Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide - Provides access to the food guide, as well as a variety of interactive tools and resources and an Educators and Communicators Handbook.

Eat Right Ontario – Provides easy-to-use nutrition information to help you make healthier food choices. Registered Dietitians provide visitors with meal planning advice, healthy eating tips, recipes and information on a variety of topics including school nutrition and healthy lunches.

Dietitians of Canada – A national professional association representing over 6000 registered dietitians across Canada. Nutrition education is provided through their website and the annual Nutrition Month Campaign.

 
Healthy Eating Curriculum Links:

Teach Nutrition - Created for Ontario teachers by Registered Dietitians.  Information on free curriculum-based nutrition programs (e.g. Power for Bones), teacher resources, student activities and more!

Mission Nutrition - Provides fun, interactive learning activities to use in the classroom and at home to get children excited about healthy living! For Educators: easy-to-use lesson plans and fun student activities! For Families: fun family activities, healthy living tips and more!

Field to Table Schools - A Toronto based program that provides students and teachers with hands-on, curriculum-linked food literacy education from JK to Grade 12.  While the listed events and workshops are located in Toronto, this site also includes a variety of curriculum resources and activities, such as The Great Big Crunch, available for download.

Finding Credible Nutrition Information - These two fact sheets will assist you in identifying   credible sources of nutrition information to use when teaching healthy eating lessons.

How to be a Family Friendly Workplace: A Best Start document containing best practices and policies for before, and during pregnancy, as well as for breastfeeding and transitioning to parenting.

Workplace Mental Health Promotion:  A How-To Guide: A comprehensive guide to promoting mental health in the workplace. It also includes resources on mental illness. 

Your Guide to a Healthy Workplace: A Toolkit: This Health Unit resource takes the reader step by step through proven strategies to build a thriving workplace.  It has ready-to-use resources and health information related to workplaces in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.

 
Physical Activity
Health Unit Lending Kits
Walk@Work: A workplace kit that has everything workplace champions need to promote regular walking in the workplace. It includes posters, sign-up sheets, motivating messages, log cards and much more.
Chose the Healthy Parking Spot:  A kit designed to encourage employees to park further away and walk more to gain the health benefits of active living. The kit is lent to workplaces for a 6 week period and includes a portable parking sign, promotional posters, motivating messages, and background information to help support active living at work.
Pedometer Lending Program: Workplaces can borrow high quality pedometers for up to 6 weeks.
Walk This Way: A guide designed for individuals who want to begin a regular walking program. Individuals can contact the Health Unit directly to receive their kit.
 
Web-Based Resources

Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit: Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention section: follow the Physical Activity link.

Virtual Walk of Prince Edward County: To participate in the Virtual Walk, you can walk anywhere, anytime, inside or outside. The time you spend walking will be counted as if you spent that time walking a piece of the distance around Prince Edward County - a virtual walk. This is an excellent resource for a workplace physical activity challenge.

Stairway to Health: Developing a Stairway to Health Program is a fun and easy way to get employees active in the workplace. From downloadable point of choice posters (the most effective option as indicated by research) to virtual challenges, this interactive website provides you with the tools you need to develop and manage a stairway to health program.

Commuter Challenge: Workplaces across Canada are challenged to give up their cars and choose active forms of transportation during National Environment Week.

Canadian Cancer Society - Provides general and nutrition information relating to the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Canadian Diabetes Association - Provides educational resource material through cookbooks and support groups.  

Community Development Council of Quinte - Coordinates the Good Food Box programs (fresh vegetables and fruit boxes).

Heart & Stroke Foundation - Provides information and literature on heart disease, stroke, and healthy lifestyles. Videos are available for loan to the public.  Healthy eating presentations are also offered.

Osteoporosis Canada - Has information and literature on Osteoporosis.  An educational DVD and a speakers program are available.
