| 10 July 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Lisa Vincent, principal of Moira Secondary School, took over as president of the Ontario Principals’ Council (OPC) for a one-year term. She has been an educator for
24 years, including 7 years as a school administrator.
Vincent has been seconded from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board for one year and will be based in Toronto until June 30, 2008. By seconding a practising principal, the OPC is able to monitor the issues and concerns that are most current and relevant to Ontario’s schools. Vincent’s experience as a front line school leader allows her to share what really happens in schools with the education minister, MPPs, stakeholder groups, media and the public. She is an experienced and knowledgeable source.
Vincent views the year ahead as a new career challenge. “After many years in a school, I now have the opportunity to focus on the provincial perspective of issues. Principals and vice-principals bring a depth of commitment and expertise to supporting students in their learning. I look forward to representing my colleagues throughout Ontario.”
In addition to Vincent, the 2007-2008 Executive includes:
• President-elect Laura Hodgins, principal with the Avon Maitland District School Board
• Vice-president Lona Joly, principal of Algonquin Public School and Long Lake Public School (Rainbow District School Board)
• Vice-president Helmut Tinnes, principal of Hespeler Public School (Waterloo District School Board)
• Member-at-Large Doug Morrell, principal of Centre Dufferin District High School (Upper Grand District School Board)
• Member-at-Large Vicki Shannon, principal of Claude E. Garton and Mackenzie School (Lakehead District School Board)
• Past-President Blair Hilts, principal of Georgian Bay Secondary School (Bluewater District School Board)
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 17,100 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of approximately 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
