| 15 October 2007, Belleville, Ontario—High school students wanting to customize their education to match their individual goals and interests can now do so at three area high schools. Those who successfully complete the required bundle of classroom courses, workplace experiences and sector certifications will receive the Specialist High Skills Major designation on their diploma.
Participating schools include:
• Centennial Secondary School, Belleville – Arts and Culture
• Centre Hastings Secondary School, Madoc – Construction
• North Hastings High School, Bancroft – Forestry
The Ministry of Education launched Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) in 2006-07 with 27 pilot programs across the province and expanded to 153 in the 2007-08 school year. The majors prepare students for apprenticeships, college, university or the work force.
“The three specialist areas chosen—Arts and Culture, Construction and Forestry—are a good fit between the district and the local communities. The three schools are excited to offer a wide range of experiences to students in the Specialist High Skills Major programs,” remarks Mandy Savery-Whiteway, System Principal for Student Success.
Students enrolled in a major gain valuable knowledge and skills that will help them excel after graduation in their chosen pathway. Employers, schools and the Ministry of Education are partnering to develop SHSM so more students can reach their full potential.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 17,100 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of approximately 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
