| 1 October 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Music students and teachers at North Hastings High School (NHHS) are marching to a new tune after being awarded $10,000 by MusiCan. Earlier this year the school applied to this national music education charity of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).
NHHS is one of 51 Canadian schools to receive a Band Aid musical instrument grant. It is to replace aged, broken and battered instruments and to help keep music alive in the school.
“I was overwhelmed when I read the email advising that NHHS had been selected,” remarks Dianne Winmill, music teacher. “This grant is a tremendous benefit to our music program. The whole school is so excited and we are very proud to be one of the recipients,” she adds.
According to Winmill the money will be used to purchase big ticket items that usually fall through the cracks due to the cost. NHHS will receive a tuba, a baritone saxophone, a bassoon, a piccolo and an oboe.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 17,100 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of approximately 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
