| 4 December 2006, Belleville, Ontario—The Board of Trustees elected a new chair and vice-chair at its initial meeting this evening. Trustee Carl Pitman was elected as chair and trustee Mary Hall was elected as vice-chair.
In his remarks, Chair Pitman stated, "As a Board, we will continue to focus on student success through the district’s system plan AiM—Achievement in Motion for Student Success. Five goals will remain in place from now until 2009, and they are: Success for All Students, System of Character, Employee Excellence, Open Communication and Community Partnerships. Our schools continue to provide safe and supportive learning environments for all students. Academic and support staff throughout the district are dedicated to ensuring that students receive the best education possible. Families and community members are—and will continue to be—valued partners in the education of children."
Trustee Mary Hall was acclaimed as the new vice-chair of the board. In her remarks, Vice-chair Hall commented that she is confident this Board will continue to make the best decisions for all students.
Pitman and Hall will occupy these positions for a one-year period.
The new Board of Trustees consists of:
• Mike Brant, appointed by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte
• Sam Clements, acclaimed for Trenton and CFB Trenton
• Cliff Cotton, re-elected as one of two trustees for Belleville/Thurlow
• Thelma Goodfellow, acclaimed for Southeast Hastings
• Mary Hall, re-elected as one of two trustees for Belleville/Thurlow
• Dwayne Inch, elected for South Prince Edward County
• Harry Marissen, acclaimed for North Prince Edward County
• Carl Pitman, re-elected for Centre Hastings
• Monica Walker, acclaimed for North Hastings
• Jim Williams, re-elected for Sidney/Frankford
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 18,000 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
