"High profile principals" at local schools
There will be a couple of new faces in at least two
Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board schools on April 12, 2000.Belleville
Mayor Ross McDougall and Mix 97's Sean Kelly are heading back to school.
Even though they're new, they're going back as principals to spend a day
getting a first hand look at both the strengths and the needs of local
schools.
It's all part of the Principal for a Day program
that is going on across the province, as community leaders from the worlds
of business, labour, non-profit organizations, government and even the
media are spending part of the day working alongside a principal or vice-principal
in a local school.
Mayor Ross McDougall will be spending the day at
Quinte Secondary School with Principal John Chapman. Mayor McDougall will
have the opportunity to experience Quinte Secondary's community of learners.
Queen Victoria Public School in Belleville will
welcome Sean Kelly, the morning man from Mix 97 as their principal for
a day. Principal Herb Pilles has hinted that Queen Vic has a full morning
planned for Mr. Kelly.
The project is an initiative by the Learning Partnership,
who also co-ordinate the Take Your Kids to Work days each year. The Principal
for a Day project started in the Greater Toronto Area in 1997 and has been
an annual event since then. Last year it became a province-wide event and
is now established as a significant initiative aimed at gaining a realistic
understanding of what schools and the community share, as well as how they
are different.
