Moira Secondary School approved
for International Baccalaureate Program
Moira Secondary School will
soon be offering students a world-class education through its new International
Baccalaureate Program. The school was recently made an affiliate school
by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, and will become one of
fewer than 20 public schools in Ontario to offer the full diploma program
starting in September 2001.
"The International Baccalaureate
Program puts Moira Secondary School on the global map in education," says
Bill Coombs, Superintendent of Instruction and Secondary Curriculum. "It's
a very exciting program that will give students an edge in the international
arena."
The International Baccalaureate
Program was originally established to provide a high-quality educational
background for the children of diplomats who were schooled abroad. The
International Baccalaureate Program offers a well-rounded education incorporating
both the arts and sciences. Within the program students are also encouraged
to conduct extensive research on a topic of interest, reflect on the nature
of learning and become active members of their community. The program is
intended for students who are motivated learners with well-developed work
habits.
In preparation for the International
Baccalaureate Program, which students enter in Grade 11, Moira Secondary
School currently offers the Foundations Program for Grades 9 and 10 students.
The program provides enrichment in all key subject areas and independent
learning opportunities for those students who are considering pursuing
the International Baccalaureate Program in their last two years of study
