Take our kids to work

On Wednesdays, May 10 and 17, many Grade 9 students from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will be off to work. It's Take Our Kids to Work day so students will join their parents at work for the day. On May 10, students from Bayside Secondary School, Centennial Secondary School, Centre Hastings Secondary School, Moira Secondary School, Prince Edward Collegiate Institute and Trenton High School will be participating and on May 17, students from North Hastings High School will take part.
Take Our Kids to Work is being offered to Grade 9 students in all eight of the Secondary Schools in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. The program strives to help students answer one of life's big questions: "How can I prepare for my future role as a worker?" First hand observation of the working world is part of the way in which students will seek answers to that question.
"This program offers students learning experiences that they just can't get in the classroom," says Lisa Vincent, Careers Curriculum Co-ordinator with the Board. "It also addresses the new career education requirements set out by the Ministry of Education."
Teachers and students work together as part of each school's career education program to assist students in early career exploration. They also look at planning the student's questions for the day in the workplace and how to report their findings.
This program is supported by many local businesses, service clubs, and chambers of commerce. Participating workplaces will be displaying a Take Our Kids to Work poster as a sign of their support.
In May Grade 9 students from the mentioned schools will be taking part. The other Grade 9 students in the District took part in Take Our Kids to Work Day on November 3, 1999.
