Kente students take first at Heritage Fair
Heritage meets hi-tech in a winning project by Grade
seven students from Kente Public School. On May 11 and 12, enrichment students
from Kente Public School participated in the 6th Annual Regional Heritage
Fair at Queen's University in Kingston.
Grade seven students, Kirk Montgomery, Kevin Montgomery,
Victoria Russell, Valerie Aiken, Allison Stather, Justin Voskamp and Curtis
Walt took first place in their category. The team did research into the
causes, battles, strategies and key personalities of the War of 1812 and
then used the information to prepare a Hyperstudio multi-media presentation.
The project will now advance to the National Heritage Fair at the Canadian
Museum of Civilization on July 15 and 16. Kirk Montgomery will represent
the team at the National Heritage Fair and participate in a week long history
camp.
Grade eight students from Kente, Elizabeth Cooper
and Tanya Mountenay, also took part in the Regional Heritage Fair. They
researched and compared the characteristics of irresponsible government
which led to the Canadian Rebellions of 1837 and the recent Kosovo Crisis,
then wrote and video taped a news report.
"The students demonstrated keen insight and higher
level thinking skills by applying, analysing, evaluating and synthesizing
the information they researched," said Enrichment Coordinator, Dierdre
Gordon.
The Heritage Fair is an event to encourage all Canadians
to celebrate their part in Canada's history. It strives to heighten awareness
in Canada's heritage and to create an exciting learning environment for
students.
