Quinte Secondary School nominated
for provincial waste reduction award
It's waste not want not at Quinte Secondary School.
The school was selected as a finalist in the Outstanding Secondary School
Award category for the 1999 Ontario Waste Minimization Awards presented
by the Recycling Council of Ontario.
"The nomination is a result of the hard work of students in the first
semester general level environmental class," said teacher Missi Waite.
Students ran a recycling program at the school that
saw waste drop by a remarkable level. Students acted as waste auditors
and checked to make sure that each classroom's waste was sorted and cleaned
properly for recycling. Participation in the recycling program was mandatory
for all classrooms and at the end of the semester a certificate went to
the best recyclers. It was no surprise to students that the classroom recycling
the most waste was the food services class. Environmental students
even dressed up as giant blue boxes to promote recycling in their school.
The Ontario Waste Minimization Awards ceremony will
take place on Monday, April 17 in Markham. Quinte Secondary School will
be presented with a certificate of merit and the winner of the award will
be announced. The Outstanding Secondary School Award carries with it a
cash prize of $1,500.
