High school students attend
Loyalist College for training
A partnership between the Hastings and Prince Edward
District School Board, Loyalist College and the local Apprenticeship Unit
of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities gives High
School students a leg up in the job market.
On Wednesday, February 9, eighteen high school students
from Prince Edward County, Belleville and Centre and South Hastings report
for their first class at Loyalist College. They are starting their Apprenticeship
Training Part I course to become Automotive Technicians. Each one of the
Grade 12 and 11 students was identified by their classroom teachers as
showing promise and skill in the area of the motive trades. This course
is the common core that leads to a career in areas such as auto mechanics,
heavy equipment mechanics or farm equipment mechanics. To be eligible for
the program, students must also be a registered apprentice. This program,
through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program of the Hastings and Prince
Edward District School Board, will give students the opportunity to graduate
from high school with more that just their diploma. Students will also
have practical classroom experience, co-op work placements with employers
in their field, and the first component towards certification in the motive
trades.
Students begin their training on February
9 at 1:00 p.m. in the Automotive Centre of Loyalist College.
