MODEL UN DEBATES INTERVENTION

Representatives of 28 countries will meet at Sir James Whitney School on October 22 and 23 to debate the abuse of human rights versus the respect for a country's sovereignty. This is the third annual Model United Nations Conference of the Quinte and District Model United Nations.

Students from all fourteen area high schools have been invited to participate by sending two teams of two senior students to debate the position of their assigned country. The two day event includes the presentation of country position papers and debate on the topic.

The objective of the Model United Nations is for students to experience the process used by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The format helps participants develop their research, presentation and debating skills.

A number of organizations have aided the Quinte and District United Nations Association in staging the Model United Nations. The Association would like to extend their appreciation for the support they have received from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, Investor's Group - Belleville, Baker's Dozen, Pizza Hut and Mr. Sub.

A reception will be held for the students and public following the event, from 3pm to 4pm, October 23 at the Teacher Education Building of Sir James Whitney.
