Quinte Secondary School teacher
shares how he makes math fun
Louis Lim, Mathematics teacher at Quinte Secondary
School, presented a "Treasure Trove of Ideas" to 450 fellow educators at
the annual conference of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
(N.C.T.M.) in Chicago. Lim's invitation to speak at the annual conference
in April came after his success presenting the same workshop at several
local chapters of the council. The talk focussed on ideas to make mathematics
fun and real for students.
What helped Lim to get to Chicago was a special
award recognizing him as a future leader in mathematics education by the
N.C.T.M. Earlier this year, Lim was awarded a FLAMeS Project Award valued
at $1,000 to help fund travel, expenses and substitute teacher costs for
him to attend the conference.
Lim has been teaching since 1996, and has already
shown a strong involvement with mathematics education. He has authored
chapters in three mathematics textbooks, published several journal articles
and resource documents, is Co-Editor of the Ontario Mathematics Gazette,
and sits on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association for Mathematics
in Education. Lim is currently working on his Masters degree at Queen's
University and has plans to pursue his Ph.D.
