Bayside Secondary student wins
full scholarship to Texas A&M University

Laura Duewel, a resident of the Stirling area and student at Bayside Secondary School has been awarded a full track scholarship at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.  The Corpus Christi campus is a new modern university, formerly a graduate school, which began accepting undergraduates in 1994.  Corpus Christi is a NCAA Division I school and has recently hired Mr. Shawn Flanagan from the University of Texas as the Track Coach.  Laura, who will be graduating from Grade 12 this June, is one of only six women who have been offered track scholarships at the university.
Laura has been involved in running since Grade 8 at Stirling Senior School, winning numerous championships along the way.  She was the COSSA champion in the 800 and 1500 metres the last two years.  Last year, she advanced to the final eight at the OFSSA championships in Toronto.  Laura was a former member of the Quinte Legion Track Club and currently trains in Kingston with Coach Dave Grant, a former Queen's University coach.
The four-year scholarship, which includes tuition, room with living allowance and books, is valued at approximately $80,000 Canadian. Laura, an 'A' student, will be entering Pre-Medicine studies at Texas A&M.
Laura would like to thank Coach Grant and all her teachers and coaches at Bayside Secondary School who have been so supportive over the past four years.
Laura is the daughter of Jurgen and Barbara Duewel of Stirling. Barb is a teacher in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board system.
