19 June 2008, Belleville, ON—The Ministry of Education has identified V.P. Carswell Elementary School as a School on the Move. The school is the district's first recipient of this designation. It represents significant recognition as only approximately 100 schools across the province have received such distinction over the past three years.
The Schools on the Move Lighthouse Program was launched in 2006 by the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat to celebrate and connect schools that are making significant and sustained progress in student achievement. V.P. Carswell Elementary School received such recognition as a result of its:
- Implementation of research-based instructional strategies
- Creation of a professional learning environment for staff
- An emphasis on data-based decision-making
- Proven continuous improvement on provincial tests
The Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat team which visited the school to determine whether it would be selected for recognition as a “school on the move” stated in its report that the staff emphasis on collaboration is permeated throughout the school; they act upon shared agreements to move their students forward, and this is evident in how their work comes together in one voice! Congratulations to V.P. Carswell Elementary School.
What is a School on the Move?
Schools on the Move are exciting places for children and
teachers, not just because everyone is learning but also
because staff understand and can describe the
practices and strategies that make a difference to their
learning as well as to their students’ learning.
Schools on the Move represent the face of change
in Ontario education. They have taken
advantage of increased resources and a more positive
climate in the Ontario education world. Schools on the Move are well along the path of school
improvement. They have already dealt successfully with
the difficulties that commonly confront schools in initiating
change, recognizing that challenges are opportunities for
learning.
