22 November 2007, Belleville, ON—Thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, funds have been provided to 200 Ontario schools to initiate a new sport or activity program. Trenton High is one of the lucky recipients!
The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ontario government, provided grants of $800 per school. These funds are to encourage high school students to become more active, more physically fit, and have exposure to non-traditional activities. The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSSA) is the facilitator in disbursing these grants to interested schools and full details on this “Try Day” project can be found on their Web site (ofsaa.on.ca).
At Trenton High, the grant will assist in promoting floorball, the world’s most popular form of indoor hockey. Floorball is a mix of hockey and soccer. The money will be used to purchase equipment and introduce the sport to the school physical education curriculum. Ms.
Leslie Umpherson, Head of Trenton High's physical education department, expressed appreciation to Juha Mikkola of the Ontario Floorball Federation for introducing all physical education students to the sport during a one-day seminar, and to Principal Darren McFarlane for supporting the initiative.
“Floorball is an exciting, fast-paced game. The students love it and are going to be participating in this sport for years to come at THS,” according to Ms. Umpherson.
