| 1 May 2008, Belleville, ON—Elementary and secondary students from throughout the district are excited about participating in Music Monday on May 5.
Music Monday is a Canada-wide event to celebrate the power of music and the importance of keeping music programs alive in schools.
Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board is celebrating Music Monday this year with special events in Bayside and North Hastings. Concerts are taking place at Bayside Public School, Bayside Secondary School and Bird’s Creek Public School.
Bird’s Creek Public School, located just north of Bancroft, is celebrating Music Monday with a joint concert/workshop with the North Hastings Community Choir, directed by Erin Morlock. The Bird’s Creek students will be singing the Music Monday “Our Song” with the community choir and learning some new songs with them. As well, the Grades 1, 2 and 6 students will be performing their festival pieces. The concert takes place at the school from 11:10 - 12:10 on Monday, May 5.
Secondary schools will be working with well-known concert band music composer, Steven Reineke, from Cincinnati, Ohio, to celebrate the fourth annual Music Monday. Over 120 secondary students will be playing in the Bayside Secondary School cafetorium for the entire day. The students have been playing Mr. Reineke’s compositions since 2001, so this is a very important event in their musical careers. They will have the opportunity to learn about the work of a composer and to be directed by a favourite composer.
A public concert is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6th, at 7:00 p.m. at Bayside Secondary School. Admission is $5 at the door. The concert features the Foxboro Drum Corps, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board String Ensemble and 120-member Honour Band.
