| 28 March 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Student leaders and staff advisors from secondary schools will participate in a one-day youth forum at the Education Centre on Monday, April 2nd. Organized by the Student Senate, this event brings together student leaders from across the district. Participants will hear messages relating to the development and refinement of leadership skills, and civic responsibilities for youth.
The keynote address features students and staff from Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute. Titled Creating & Sustaining a Student Driven Culture of Peace in Your School, this presentation will focus on how the Anderson CVI school community (Whitby, Ontario) implemented a culture of peace and leadership enrichment programs.
Following the keynote address, approximately 100 student leaders and staff advisors participate in workshops on:
• Health and Sexuality
• Stress and the Student Leader
• Don’t Take the Bait: Avoiding Addictive Habits
• New Faces, Different Cultures
• Protecting Each Other – Internet Safety
Leadership is Action will challenge participants to think beyond the usual channels to initiate change at their schools. Students will learn to broaden their leadership skills through creative processes. Together with their staff advisor, students will link the day’s outcomes to the board’s system plan AiM—Achievement in Motion for Student Success and its eight character development attributes: caring, co-operation, honesty, humour, integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness.
The event will wrap up with a school discussion of the issues addressed during the day and a planning session to provide direction for follow-up at each secondary school.
Media representatives are invited to attend the Leadership is Action youth forum anytime during the day.
