| 9 November 2006, Belleville, Ontario—Grade 10 history students at Quinte Secondary School found out first-hand how their actions can make a difference. Earlier this semester, they signed a petition to support the renaming of sections of Highway 62 to the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment Memorial Highway.
A private members’ bill tabled by MPP Ernie Parsons was passed, enabling the changes to proceed.
Students have been invited to the Armouries on Friday, November 10th for the unveiling of the first road sign.
According to teacher Kathy Eyres, “The student will always know they played a part in this very worthwhile project to remember and honour our local veterans.”
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 18,000 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
