11 December 2006, Belleville, ON— Students studying communications technology at Quinte Secondary are getting first-hand experience creating documentaries, recording videos and interviewing veterans.
According to teacher Matt Grunig, the students released a DVD entitled Quinte Remember
2006 in September. The DVD is a documentary about local veterans. It was
shown at the school's Remembrance Day assembly, as well as at ceremonies of the Kiwanis Club and the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps (Quinte Branch). This
DVD was a community project which included members from Legions in Belleville,
Picton and Trenton. Other contributors included M.P.P. Ernie Parsons and The Memory Project's Phillip Etter.
Students interviewed many contributors
On October 29, M.P.P. Ernie Parsons visited with students. On
November 2, they interviewed Mr. John Beacock of the Picton Legion. On November 3 they interviewed Mr. Phillip Etter. On November 4 they interviewed Mr.
George Whittle from the Trenton Legion. On November 5 they interviewed Mr. Don
McPherson from the Belleville Legion. On November 10 the students were invited by M.P.P. Ernie Parsons to the Hastings Prince Edward
Armouries for a ceremony to rename Highway 62.
The students also released another DVD entitled "Quinte S.S.
Presents - Relay for Life" which documents the Relay for Life held at the school on September 29, 2006. This video includes music written and
recorded at Q.S.S. by local musicians Tony Vani, Debbie Hoskin and Gary Hagan.
Community interaction
On December 4, Mr. Ian Acton from Cogeco Belleville brougt a
Cogeco television mobile unit to Q.S.S. and gave the students a
demonstration on the truck and cameras, and answered questions.
On December 6 Todd Smith from Quinte Bradcasting visited the class and interacted with students about radio broadcasting.
