Media advisory: Students celebrate conservation successes
13 April 2007, Belleville, ON—Trenton High School is extending a warm welcome to the media and the public for a ‘cool’ event on Friday, April 20, 2007: Chillin’ With the Planet, Caring for Our Community.

Canadian author and photographer Bruce Kirkby will be the keynote speaker. His speech will focus on the role of leadership, character building and personal responsibility in caring for the environment. Additional speakers will include Carl Pitman, Chair of the Board, and EarthCARE™ teams will present their projects. There will also be student EarthCARE displays and presentations.

This special event will celebrate results for the environmental achievements of students involved in EarthCARE. Launched in 2005 with partner Ameresco Canada, EarthCARE is an occupant-behaviour energy conservation program.

The district has spent $42 million to upgrade facilities and conserve energy. Currently 75 percent of the school improvements and upgrades have been completed, with the remainder scheduled over the next three years. This year alone, the district has saved over $1 million on utility costs and reduced greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions by 8,050 tonnes, or 35 percent.

The EarthCARE environmental education program encourages students, teachers and staff to engage in conservation-friendly behaviours in the classroom and the community. Since September 2005 it has saved the district an additional $150,000 in Lights Off, Computers Off, equivalent to a 1.4-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions, or the equivalent of planting 46 mature trees.
