10 November 2006, Belleville, Ontario—Children and families from Massassaga-Rednersville Public School are making a difference for children in Africa. They've adopted Kendwa Village School, a small school in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Africa.
The school council is spearheading this project and is linking it to the Ontario curriculum. In a letter to families, they referenced a paragraph from the Ministry of Education's Choices into Action document that states Students must learn and develop skills at school that will help them become more independent and responsible individuals. They must be able to apply what they learn in school to other areas of their lives . . . In Junior Kindergarten to Grade Six, students are taught "Social Responsibility" which allows them to demonstrate their understanding of "being a responsible citizen" in the classroom and the school."
The first area of support is the collection of good, clean used clothing. Students are challenged to each donate two to five items they have outgrown. Clothing for spring, summer or fall in infant, child, youth and adult sizes will be accepted. The clothing will be packed in 100 pound packages and shipped from Toronto to Mombassa, Kenya. A community member is helping with shipping and will be in Kenya to accept, transport and distribute the clothing.
Kendwa Village School provides instruction to approximately 500 students in the morning and a different group of 500 students in the afternoon. They are from a poverty-stricken area and are in need of basic necessities.
Massassaga-Rednersville Public School, located in a rural setting overlooking the Bay of Quinte on Rednersville Road is just south of Belleville in Prince Edward County and serves approximately 182 Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 students.
Facilities include a computer lab, science/multi-purpose room, an automated library, a well-equipped gymnasium with a stage for performances, and an open playground, which includes a track, soccer field, a baseball diamond, sun shelter, and basketball courts. Massassaga-Rednersville PS provides strong academics and sports programs and receives excellent community support. Its code of conduct incorporates RESPECT for learning, self, others, authority, property and the environment. A before and after school program, in conjunction with the YMCA, is also hosted at this school. Massassaga-Rednersville school has a strong school history, with a small school atmosphere. Students proceed to Kente Public School for Grade 7 and 8.
