| 14 November 2006, Belleville, Ontario—As a result of last night’s municipal election the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) will have three new members on the Board of Trustees.
Consisting of nine elected members and one appointed by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, HPEDSB trustees are fiscally accountable to the Ministry of Education and the public. They ensure that the focus of education is on student achievement. Trustees are committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students and employees. Through the district’s system plan, AiM—Achievement in Motion for Student Success, trustees further affirm their commitment to provide programs and services to help all students and employees reach their full potential.
The outcome of last night’s municipal election reveals that the new Board members will be:
• Sam Clements, acclaimed for Trenton and CFB Trenton.
• Cliff Cotton, re-elected as one of two trustees for Belleville/Thurlow.
• Thelma Goodfellow, acclaimed for Southeast Hastings.
• Mary Hall, re-elected as one of two trustees for Belleville/Thurlow.
• Dwayne Inch, elected for South Prince Edward County.
• Harry Marissen, acclaimed for North Prince Edward County.
• Carl Pitman, re-elected for Centre Hastings.
• Monica Walker, acclaimed for North Hastings.
• Jim Williams, re-elected for Sidney/Frankford.
Still to come is the appointment of a trustee for the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. Mike Brant has held the position for the past three years. The appointment is expected within the next few weeks.
Long-serving trustees Audrey Carter, North Prince Edward Country, Judy Edgar, North Hastings; and Kathy Peever, South Prince Edward County did not seek re-election.
The new Board will have its initial meeting on Monday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Education Centre, 156 Ann Street, Belleville. At that meeting, members will:
• Elect a chair
• Elect a vice-chair
• Establish standing committees for the coming year
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 18,000 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
