| 30 January 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Selected Grade 7 and 8 students throughout the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board will participate in a hands-on event related to science, engineering and technology.
SETUP (Science Engineering Technology Ultimate Pathways) has been created to help address the growing need to educate students about science and technology professions and skilled trades as viable career pathways. SETUP gives students the opportunity to speak with and question community members from technology fields about the pathway they took to their career, through high school and beyond.
Students will participate in one-day SETUP events. They will pair off in teams of two and work through various challenges. Speed Trap involves using a technical drawing, materials and tools provided to construct a mousetrap-powered vehicle that will travel as far and as fast as possible. Rock Your World involves designing and building a wood structure that will support as much weight as possible during a simulated earthquake. Two other challenges, Shine Like a Star and Recipes for Success will stimulate the students’ imaginations!
Three dates and locations are scheduled, with each running from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.:
• St. Theresa Secondary School on Friday, February 9
• Centre Hastings Secondary School on Friday, February 23
• Loyalist College on Friday, March 2
Media representatives are invited to attend any of the above sessions.
