Citizens to be honoured for Great Place Awards
5 June 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Congratulations are in order for 10 Hastings and Prince Edward citizens who support student achievement and help to make the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board A Great Place to Learn and A Great Place to Work!

6th Annual Great Place Awards
The 6th Annual Great Place Awards will be presented at the June public Board meeting. These prestigious awards recognize outstanding contributions by students, staff, parents and guardians, and community partners. The Great Place Awards are the highest form of recognition within the district.

The 2007 Great Place Award recipients are:
• Sherrilee Bell, Teacher, Sophiasburgh Central School
• Joyce Brown, Crossing Guard, Earl Prentice Public School
• Roger Flower, Custodian, Massassaga-Rednersville Public School
• Laura Kearse, In-school Resource Teacher, William R. Kirk School
• Ene Reid, Librarian, Madoc Public School
• Carl Romanidis, Teacher, Centennial Secondary School
• Elizabeth Sills, Teacher, Sir John A. Macdonald School
• Sue Taylor, Human Resources Officer – Teaching, Education Centre
• Dawn Wright, Educational Assistant, Bayside Secondary School
• Trenton Horticultural Society – Bev Foshay, Helen Skillen, Jack & Pat Rumsam, and Kimberly Stinson

“It is gratifying to have such special people work for or involved with the public school board. Each one is known for modelling the character attributes that our board has chosen,” remarks trustee Thelma Goodfellow, who made a special trip to each school last Friday to congratulate award recipients. “I got a thrill out of saying ‘Come on down,’ when I announced their names and called them to the front of the room,” she adds.

The 10 award recipients will be recognized and presented with their award as follows:

This year, the nomination criteria was aligned with the Board’s system plan which is called AiM—Achievement in Motion for Student Success. One of five goals in this plan is System of Character. Earlier this year the Board of Trustees approved eight attributes that will support HPEDSB in becoming a system of character. The eight attributes are: caring, co-operation, honesty, humour, integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness.

The Great Place Awards Committee received 35 nominations representing employee groups, volunteers, parents and guardians, and community partners.

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has 46 elementary and eight secondary schools serving 18,700 students, employing 1,067 teachers and 775 support staff. The Board covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south, and Quinte West to the west.
