Centennial SS students participate in national Model UN event
22 March 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Four Centennial Secondary senior students have the honour of being the district’s first active participants a Canadian national and international Model United Nations event. The Canadian International Model United Nations (CANIMUN) Conference is a four-day bilingual event held in Ottawa every March. This event offers a unique Canadian and international Model UN experience for post-secondary level delegates from across Canada and around the world.

CSS's participation is a notable achievement given that the delegates participated alongside college and university students from around the world. Generally high school student act as observers and pages at CANIMUN.

Teacher Matt Ronan, who coached the students, remarks, “I am very proud of the students. They worked independently to prepare their position papers and demonstrated tremendous leadership.”

The four students, Mara Abolins, Alec Miljic, Andrew Rigsby and Melissa Semenuk represented Cuba. Abolins, who led the contingent, was invited to participate in CANIMUN based on her performance at the Quinte Model United Nations event held last fall.

“It is very exciting to see our students participate at this level and particularly to take their research and experience from Hastings and Prince Edward to an international level,” adds Ronan.

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board serves approximately 18,000 students each day at 46 elementary and 8 secondary schools. Supporting student achievement is the goal of 1,800 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning. The district covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
