| 1 May 2007, Belleville, Ontario—Put together 1 piccolo, 17 flutes, 19 clarinets, 3 oboes, 2 bass clarinets, 2 bassoons, 20 saxophones, 12 trumpets, 5 french horns, 6 trombones, 3 baritones, 2 tubas,
4 string bass, 13 percussionists and 1 pianist with incredible concert band music and you have the 2007 Honour Band. The Honour Band is made up of students invited to participate by their music teachers from all eight secondary schools across the two counties.
On Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th at Bayside Secondary School, 110 students will spend two full days rehearsing with Jim White, Professor Emeritus, University of Western Ontario. Each section of the band will have special clinics with professional musicians and music teachers to work on their specific areas. Lisa Kemp (flute), Andrew Cranshaw (clarinet), Greg Garrett and Dan Bone (saxophone), Blair Yarranton and Tim Gordon (trumpet), Dianne Winmill (french horn), Shawn Fairbrother (lower brass/bass), Pekka Tanskannen (percussion), and Greg Garrett and Linda Minty (strings) will conduct master classes over the two days.
The students will be preparing for a special evening concert for the public on Tuesday, May 15 at
7:00 p.m. performing the music they have rehearsed over the two-day period. This special event will push students’ abilities and introduce them to the wider musical community.
During the school year jazz students auditioned to be part of the HPEDSB Jazz Band, conducted by Shawn Fairbrother and Blair Yarranton. In addition, a special string program was introduced with the sponsorship of the Quinte Symphony to encourage students to play in a string ensemble. The 25-member ensemble met at a central location on a number of rehearsal days to work together under the direction of Greg Garrett, assisted by Linda Minty, principal cellist of the Quinte Symphony. The string ensemble received a gold certificate at the Rotary Music Festival in April. Both groups will perform at the concert representing the school district.
As a result of a very generous donation to The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation Arts campaign from Ameresco Canada, the percussion section will be featured in a number of pieces on new equipment including a 4-octave marimba, timpani, orchestral bells, chimes and crash cymbals.
For the first time the Foxboro Public School Drum Corps will open the concert under the direction of music teacher, Pekka Tanskanen. This popular group of elementary students has won two gold certificates at Rotary Music Festival, performed in parades and at school concerts.
Honour Band selections will be chosen from:
• Abracadabra by Frank Ticheli
• Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual by Robert W. Smith
• English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams
• Flight of the Griffin by Brian Balmages
• Into the Raging River by Steven Reineke
• Royal Canadian Sketches by Ralph Ford
• Shenandoah arr. by Frank Ticheli

This event is sponsored by the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and is organized by Arts Co-ordinator Susan Davies and Bayside Secondary School Arts Department Head Shawn Fairbrother.
