Phys ed leaders gather for student success
23 February 2006, Belleville, Ontario—Supporting student success through integration with health and physical education is the focus of a conference for educators tomorrow at Queen’s University.

The annual winter conference of OASPHE, the Ontario Association for the Supervision of Physical and Health Education, is expected to bring together 175 educators from public and Catholic school boards, private schools, colleges and universities, up from the mid-40s last year.

“The stronger focus on health and physical education continues to be exciting,” remarks Nancy Popovich, Curriculum Co-ordinator with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. “As educators, we are keen to implement initiatives to ensure a healthier generation of kids.”

Keynote speaker Ian Carswell, Superintendent of Special Education with the Upper Canada District School Board will touch on The Promise of Health and Physical Education in Supporting Student Success. Workshops will include:

• Floorball Hockey—Let’s get our kids active
• Think Literacy—Health and Physical Education Phase II Resource
• Fitness Assessment
• Teaching Games for Understanding

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has 46 elementary and eight secondary schools serving 18,400 students, employing 1,070 teachers and 705 support staff. The Board covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south, and Quinte West to the west.
