FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HPEDSB presents the 133-member Honour Band
1 June 2006, Belleville, Ontario—Put together two piccolos, 20 flutes, 22 clarinets, two oboes, two bass clarinets, two bassoons, 20 saxophones, 20 trumpets, four French horns, eight trombones, three baritones, two tubas, nine string bass, 14 percussionists and three pianists with incredible concert band music and you have the 2006 Honour Concert Band of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. The Honour Band is made up of students invited to participate by their music teachers from all eight public secondary schools across the two counties.

On Wednesday, May 31st and Thursday, June 1st at Bayside Secondary School, the 133 students from the eight secondary schools will spend two full days rehearsing with Gordon Craig, conductor of the Quinte Symphony Orchestra. Each section of the band will have special clinics with professional musicians and music teachers to work on their specific areas. Anne Palmer (Flute), Gordon Craig (Clarinet), Katie Legere (Bassoon), Chris Alfano (Saxophone), Wayne Tindale (Trumpet), Shelley MacKenzie-Coates (French Horn), John Palmer (Lower Brass), Pekka Tanskannen (Percussion), and Greg Garrett (Strings and Bass) will conduct master classes over the two days.

The students will be preparing a special evening concert for the public performing the music they have rehearsed over the two day period. This special event will push students’ abilities and introduce them to the wider musical community. Last year was the first joint band effort in many years in this area and the overwhelming success of the event led to this year’s enhanced program. During the school year jazz students auditioned to be part of the HPEDSB Jazz Band, conducted by Shawn Fairbrother and Blair Yarranton. In addition, a special string program was introduced to encourage students to play in a string ensemble. The twenty member ensemble met at a central location on a number of rehearsal days to work together under the direction of Greg Garrett, assisted by Linda Minty, principal cellist of the Quinte Symphony. The string ensemble received a gold certificate at the Rotary Music Festival in April. Both groups will perform at the concert representing the school district.

Concert Band selections will be chosen from: Africa (Robert W. Smith), Amazing Grace (arr. by Frank Ticheli), Music from Braveheart (arr. by Johnnie Vinson), The Echo Never Fades (David R. Gillingham), Morris Dance (Edward German), Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons (Steven Reineke), Themes Like Old Times (Warren Barker) and The Witch and the Saint (Steven Reineke).

This event is sponsored by the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and is organized by board Arts Co-ordinator, Susan Davies and BSS Arts Department Head, Shawn Fairbrother.

The public concert begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 1st at Bayside Secondary School. Admission is $5.00 at the door. For further information please contact Susan Davies, 966-1170 ext. 2209
