13 June 2006 Belleville, Ontario—The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board is pleased to see that the provincial government is continuing to fund student achievement through the commitments it has made to the educational community. Those commitments include:
Of the $600 million increase in operating grants announced by the provincial government yesterday, the majority of funds will go towards the following:
|1. wage increases as a result of last year’s provincial labour framework||$338 million|
|2. additional primary and elementary specialist teachers||$166 million|
|3. additional student success teachers in secondary school||$ 19 million|

Cost benchmarks for utilities and fuel have been increased by only 2 percent. Other non-salary benchmarks have not been increased. When combined with a loss of $1 million in special education funding for 2006-2007, HPEDSB faces challenges in balancing its budget.
The Board is scheduled to approve its budget in late August 2006.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has 46 elementary and eight secondary schools serving 18,700 students, employing 1,067 teachers and 775 support staff. The Board covers a wide geographical area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south, and Quinte West to the west.
